Why In Her Interest, LLC

Vision: To disrupt the wealth protection industry by empowering women inheritors to their full financial agency.

Mission: To cause more redistribution of financial capital into the hands of marginalized community by empowering women inheritors to align their wealth to their values, stop hoarding wealth, and fight back against the systemic wealth protection industry.

The empowerment of the women wealth inheritors to understand and design the best financial structure and management for their wealth is paramount to In Her Interest.  It is through this achievement that financial capital will be unlocked from the wealth protection industry and deployed into community.  When women understand what they have and what they need, they share the rest.  This creates a public/societal benefit. The greatest transfer of wealth from male baby-boomers to female baby-boomers is just beginning to get under way, so now is the time to empower these women to create an economic world of which they can be proud.

In Her Interest will meet each inheritor where she is in her journey toward aligning wealth with her values.  There is no one path to meet the goals of shrinking the wealth gap or creating climate protections and it is most important that each of us do what is in our power to do, one day at a time, starting now.  In Her Interest will provide materials for reflection, activities to build financial skills, and exposures to models that are working and not working to affect positive economic change, all in the interest of guiding each woman along her own path toward her best contribution to better economic systems.

Once the inheritors are comfortable with their understanding of the economic challenges and need for wealth redistribution, In Her Interest will empower the inheritors to engage with the gatekeepers in their financial lives to determine how to design and implement the structures best suited to their values.  In the case of trust assets where there may be legal impediments to their desires, we will work creatively to extract the most agency possible using the most radical and brave precedents we can find and or create together.

In Her Interest will improve with each relationship and continue to revise and design better mechanisms to support women inheritors meeting their full financial agency.  It is possible that together we will determine that there is a better way to estate plan for our families, creating a more just economy and a more sustainable ecosystem. And, we believe these aspirations will help unlock the financial wealth hoarded in generational inheritance, and protected by gatekeepers.

Why the name In Her Interest

The words In Her Interest were chosen for many reasons. We believe empowering women is in the interest of the entire community and the planet because the systems of capitalism and patriarchy are not working for the betterment of the whole. And we believe women are particularly well suited to design systems that work for more positive outcomes for more people and the planet.

Also, In Her Interest includes and/or suggests the words:

Interest in, meaning a desire to learn and understand something or someone. Women have been undervalued and unseen in the so many of our societal systems. But, more and more scholars and educators are beginning to agree that women hold the characteristics needed for society to succeed into the future.

Interest earned, meaning value paid for the use of a resource. Women have traditionally been underpaid and undervalued for their efforts, one example being their work to maintain household budgets and schedules. It’s time we recognize the valuable resources and leadership women have always contributed and compensate them with acknowledgment and respect.

Inherit, meaning inherited financial resources, as well as inherited struggles and strengths from operating in the current financial systems. Women have the tools to nurture different systems for the next generation to inherit.

Inherent, meaning women are inherently well suited to do the work of systems change.

Inter-rest, meaning the internal rest that can be found when we stop trying to conform to systems that aren’t working, and we disrupt in a womanly way!

Who is In Her Interest

In Her Interest, LLC was founded by Katherine Hayes, a 5th generation wealth inheritor of the Andersen Windows fortune.  Katherine has a unique set of skills and lived experience to offer in the empowerment and education of other inheritors.

  • Investment Portfolio Manager for her family’s investment partnership for 13 years.

  • Private Trust Company board chair for 7 years.

  • Governance boards of the full service family office and foundation for 25 years.

  • Mediation training from Hamline University and the Conflict Resolution Center of Minneapolis.

  • MBA from St. Thomas University

  • B.A. from Carleton College

  • More Experience

While Katherine served as portfolio manager for her family’s investment partnership, she attended several family business conferences annually, and participated on numerous panels and gave many presentations on the best practice of family business.  St. Thomas University’s Family Business Center published an essay she wrote about family conflict in a book with other essays on family business best practice.  The perspective as an employee of the family wealth management business as well as being in positions of governance for the family office, trust company and family foundation has given Katherine the unique ability to see the many tools of wealth protection more clearly than the average inheritor who isn’t also a financial professional.  This in addition to her deep desire to understand the impact of her choices led Katherine to question whether the systems in use by her family could ever align with her values.  Having determined that they could not, Katherine divested from her family investment partnership, trust company, and foundation in 2023.  The extraction was complicated, difficult and painful.  And, this experience was the most freeing thing she has ever experienced.  It is what she believes qualifies her to help other women find their financial freedom from wealth protection and hoarding.

Katherine is also a creative by nature, an accomplished craftsperson, jeweler, and repair expert.  These combined skills have enhanced Katherine’s lived experience as an inheritor.  She has experienced the inside and outside of the wealth protection industry through the discerning lense of a creative problem solver with a deep desire to create systems change toward better economic outcomes for the most people.
